Short-Term Rental Awareness Campaign

Short-Term Rental Awareness Campaign

Capturing the vital impact short-term rentals have on local economies

Land of The Sky Association of REALTORS®

In 2018, the city of Asheville successfully passed a ban on all short-term vacation rentals (STVRs) - leaving many residents without a supplemental source of income and tourists to look outside Asheville city limits to the surrounding county for short-term rental opportunities.

Almost five years later, Buncombe County leaders seek to ban STVRs across the entire county - with very few exceptions left to support the STVR community. As local leaders attempted to fast-track the planning and approval processes for a proposed county-wide ban of short-term rentals, very little room was left for community organizations and stakeholders to present accurate information about the impact this ban would have on the local economy and weren’t given access to engage in meaningful dialogue surrounding this important issue.

An engaging message that advocated for change

Once contracted, Sinclair Agency laid out a strategic plan - rooted in three core principles that we believed to be vital to LOTSAR’s issue advocacy campaign:

Garner awareness | Amplify the message | Mobilize the community

As the campaign team began to deploy targeted community outreach tactics, local residents and media outlets quickly took note - resulting in several media mentions, media opportunities for the STR Trust and its campaign, and notable turnout to local meetings.
